Who Can Apply

COLT welcomes fit, healthy and enthusiastic high school graduates, 19 years and older, to apply. (18 year olds will be considered.)  A love for the outdoors is required. Previous camping experience is a definite asset. Each student should be in good physical condition and enjoy good health. All students must agree to follow the course rules and be committed to working as a team. Students must be able to speak and understand English with reasonable comprehension. However there is no required level of skill in any outdoor activity.

COLT trains teachers not athletes, so fitness is not a determining factor for whether you get in the course or not. That said being in descent shape will make your COLT experience more enjoyable. We suggest COLT students should be able to comfortably hike 10 kilometres in a mountain setting before arriving for the course. If you have any concerns about your fitness please contact us, jim@colt.bc.ca or 250-286-3122.

Application Process

To be accepted to the COLT program fill out the application forms (download them here) and mail, fax or email it to the COLT Director. We can’t guarantee acceptance, but most people who meet the basic requirements of the program have a very good chance.

Here’s how it works:

Complete the online application form or download it and email or fax it to us. Note that we ask for two references that we can check – one from a friend and another from an employer or teacher. Please include email addresses. You will receive an email telling you we received the application.

Send a $2,000.00 deposit and the completed and signed Code of Conduct, Waiver and Medical Form by mail. The deposit will be cashed only if you are accepted into the semester. We will send you a receipt and letter of acceptance when we receive the deposit. We can’t hold a spot on the roster and officially enrol you until the deposit is received.
Begin preparing for the best three months of your life. Check out the suggested reading and equipment list.

Insurance

Medical

All students should have adequate coverage for the possibility of a medical emergency. Canadian students should ensure premiums are paid before attending COLT. Foreign students should purchase insurance through an insurance broker before they leave.

Cancellation

Although injuries and illnesses are rare, students in the past have had to drop out of the program in the past. We have also had two students get hurt before they even arrived and had to withdraw before the course even started. We reserve the right to keep all deposits, so trip insurance is a way to safeguard your investment. Keep in mind that should you withdraw from our course for any reason, we have a refund policy that does provide a partial refund, but it is not a full refund and after Day 30, we provide no refund.

If you are interested in insurance to protect all your course fees in case of injury or illness, we suggest you contact your insurance agent. Make sure you stipulate that you are interested in protecting your course fees – your two deposits and balance of fees due on Day 1 – as most travel insurance just covers potential loss of hotel fees, airline tickets, etc. We have worked with Travel Underwriters Insurance in the past www.travelunderwriters.com and can help you get trip cancellation trip interruption insurance from them. The costs range from $300 and up to protect your full $12,000 investment.

Keep in mind that if we cancel a course, we would always refund any payments made to us, so you are protecting your tuition and food/accommodation fees from a possible injury or illness that would prevent you from continuing with the course or attending it at all should you get hurt or ill before the start.
